It gives me bouts of anxiety to think how close we are to officially being in the fall season. Where did this summer, 6 months, year, go??? And while we have Labor Day encroaching on us this weekend, it is insane to think that we’re winding down on this year. My apologies for the nostalgia/minor freak outs of how quickly my wedding will be here, let’s curb those knots in our stomachs with a refreshing cocktail shall we?
I stumbled upon this recipe, while thinking about the abundance of fruit we have in the house and trying to come up with a simple drink recipe to serve this Labor Day Weekend. Enter the Blueberry Rum Smash. A very simple drink recipe, that’s refreshing and hey it has antioxidants!! So without further ado, let’s make some cocktails
Fresh or frozen blueberrys, I used fresh (they’re easier to mash)
1 tablespoon of brown sugar
3/4 ounce of lemon juice, the recipe I found suggested fresh squeezed, but I just used the fresh lemon juice in the squeeze bottle
2 ounces of rum, normally I recommend going nuts on the booze, but I would stick to the recommendation on this one otherwise the rum will completely overpower the refreshing blueberries
First, start off with a sweet mason jar to serve your cocktail in. The original recipe showed a much larger jar, but I liked the smaller more individual servings.
Layer your blueberries along the bottom of the jar, if you’re using a smaller jar, double up on the blueberries.
Once you have layered your blueberries, add your brown sugar on top of the berries, and pour in your lemon juice.
Proceed to mash the blueberries with the back of the spoon, the goal here is to just mash them, not create a pulp.
Fill the glass with crushed ice
Add in your rum
Finish with your ginger ale and stir.
I chose to garnish with a sprig of mint for color, but the cocktail is so lovely on it’s own, it doesn’t really need much.
Drink up and enjoy the last weekend of Summer!
Also, a huge thank you to my fiancé Matt for helping me photograph this cocktail!
